Head of Science Job Responsibilities
- Lead and develop the Science department across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5
- Drive outstanding teaching, learning and assessment across the faculty
- Develop a curriculum that is both academically rigorous and engaging
- Support and coach colleagues to continually improve classroom practice
- Monitor student progress and implement strategies to maximise achievement
- Promote STEM opportunities and enrichment across the school
- Contribute to whole-school leadership and improvement priorities
- Ensure the highest standards of safety within practical Science teaching
The Science Department
The Science department benefits from a suite of purpose-built laboratories, with teachers having access to their own dedicated teaching spaces supported by experienced technicians.
Science is a popular subject throughout the school, with strong uptake at A Level and a significant proportion of students choosing Triple Science at GCSE. Students are curious, motivated and eager to engage with practical investigation and scientific enquiry.
The department combines experienced practitioners with talented newer teachers, creating a collaborative environment where ideas are shared and professional growth is actively encouraged.
Leadership Development
This role would suit an established Head of Science or a talented second-in-department, Key Stage Coordinator or Lead Practitioner seeking their first departmental leadership position.

Person Specification
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS)
- Degree in a Science-related subject
- Proven success teaching Science at secondary level
- Ability to teach Science across Key Stages 3 and 4, with KS5 experience desirable
- Strong understanding of curriculum development and assessment
- Experience leading initiatives, projects or teams within a department
- Commitment to raising achievement for all learners
- Passion for STEM education and enrichment
