PRU Teaching Assistant Job in Lewisham
Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant with a passion for supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?
A specialist SEMH primary school in Lewisham is seeking a dedicated and resilient Teaching Assistant to join their team from September 2026. This is a full-time, long-term position for the entire academic year and would suit candidates with experience working with challenging behaviour in schools, PRUs, alternative provisions, youth work, care settings or similar environments.

The PRU Teaching Assistant Job Role
- Supporting pupils with SEMH needs across the primary age range
- Working on a 1:1 basis and with small groups
- Building positive relationships and helping pupils regulate their emotions
- Supporting behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques
- Encouraging engagement with learning and promoting positive outcomes
- Working closely with teachers, therapists and pastoral staff
- Creating a safe, nurturing and structured learning environment
The Ideal Teaching Assistant
- Experience working with SEMH, challenging behaviour or vulnerable young people
- Previous experience within a school, PRU, alternative provision or specialist setting is highly desirable
- Youth work, mentoring, coaching, care or support work experience will also be considered
- Calm, resilient and patient approach
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills
- Ability to remain positive and professional in challenging situations
- Passion for supporting children who require additional emotional and behavioural support
