Are you an experienced HLTA with a passion for supporting children with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs?

A welcoming primary school in South-East London is seeking an exceptional Higher Level Teaching Assistant to join its specialist SEMH unit, supporting a small group of up to six pupils. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a genuine difference in a highly supportive environment where relationships, consistency and high expectations are at the heart of everything.

The unit provides tailored support for children who require additional emotional and behavioural support to access learning successfully. Lessons are carefully planned and differentiated by the teaching team, allowing you to focus on delivering engaging sessions, building positive relationships and helping every child achieve success.

The HLTA Job Role

• Deliver pre-planned and differentiated lessons to a small group of pupils with SEMH needs.
• Lead learning confidently and adapt your approach to meet individual needs.
• Create a calm, structured and nurturing learning environment.
• Use positive behaviour strategies and emotional regulation techniques to support pupils.
• Build strong, trusting relationships with children, staff and families.
• Work closely with teachers and the wider inclusion team to ensure excellent outcomes for every child.

We Are Looking a HLTA Who:

• Ideally holds HLTA status or has strong experience working at HLTA level
• Has proven experience supporting children with SEMH needs.
• Ideally has worked within a specialist setting such as a PRU, Alternative Provision (AP), specialist school or SEMH unit.
• Is confident leading lessons independently using initiative and professional judgement.
• Remains calm under pressure and can successfully de-escalate challenging situations without raising their voice.
• Is proactive, resilient and committed to helping children overcome barriers to learning.
• Has high expectations and genuinely believes every child can succeed with the right support.
